Name formatting requirements

In one sentence
Copy the last name field and the first name field from your ID document. Every word you enter must appear on the document, so do not add anything that is not printed on it. Up to two characters of difference per word are tolerated, which covers accents, capitals and small spelling variations, but no more than that.

Last name

Enter your birth name, the one in the last name field of your document (labelled "Nom", "Surname", "Apellidos", "Name"). Copy the whole field: if it contains several words, write them all, in the printed order.

Do not split a name with a space
If your document prints the name as one word, enter it as one word. Adding a space where the document has none is the most common cause of failure.

First name

Copy the first name field of your document, in the printed order. If it lists several names, you may enter them all. Never add a name that is not printed on the document, such as a nickname or a preferred name.

Your document has two last name fields. Enter only the "Nom" field. Never enter the "Nom d'usage" field, even if it is the name you use every day.

Your academic title is printed in its own field ("Doktorgrad", "Akademischer Grad"). It is not part of your name, so do not enter it.

Nobiliary particles and titles (von, zu, Graf, Gräfin, Freiherr), on the other hand, are part of the legal last name and appear in the "Name" field. Enter them.

Your name is printed twice: in the local alphabet, then in Latin characters. Enter the Latin version, in full.

If it shows two spellings joined by OR, copy the whole line, OR included: together, both spellings form your official name.

If the verification still fails

Check that every word you entered is printed on your document. A word that is not on the document, even a middle name or an initial, fails the verification.
Check your spacing against the document, particularly around particles such as D', L', M', VAN, DE.
Retake the photo. Document flat, well lit, no glare, all four corners visible, both sides if it is a card.
